What is an internet leased line (ILL), and does your business need one?

Broadband, semi leased line and ILL explained in plain words: contention, upload speed, SLAs and static IPs, and how to decide which one your business actually needs.

Most shops and small offices run happily on business broadband. Some businesses, such as factories, hospitals, schools and offices with servers or many staff on cloud tools, need something stronger. That is where a leased line comes in.

Broadband vs leased line in one sentence

On broadband, the capacity from your area to the internet is shared between many customers. On an internet leased line (ILL), the bandwidth is reserved for you alone, 1:1, all the time.

What "contention" means

Contention is how many users share the same capacity. Shared broadband is designed on the fact that not everyone uses full speed at once. Usually that works well, but at busy times speeds can vary.

Divyata offers three levels:

What you get with an ILL

  • Same speed up and down, guaranteed, which matters for servers, CCTV uploads, VPNs and video conferencing.
  • A service level target: Divyata targets 4 hours to resolve leased-line incidents.
  • Static IP addresses, native IPv6 and reverse DNS.
  • BGP with your own ASN and prefixes if you bring your own IP space (BYOIP).
  • Anti-DDoS protection included.

Signs your business needs a leased line

  • Staff complain the internet slows down at certain times of day.
  • You host servers, CCTV or a VPN that people connect to from outside.
  • A few hours offline would cost more than the leased line itself.
  • You need a written SLA for your own customers or auditors.

If none of these apply, business broadband is probably the right choice, and you can move to a leased line later.

How to get a quote

Leased line prices depend on your location, the bandwidth and the route. Ask for a quote on the internet leased line page and our team will check feasibility at your premises.
